U.S. INS Extends Custody Period

An interim regulation, slated for tomorrow's Federal Register, extends from 24 to 48 hours or 'an additional reasonable time' the period that an individual can be held without a determination of whether an Notice to Appear (N.T.A.) [i.e., a formal accusation or charging document beginning the commencement of removal/deprotation proceedings] will be issued. Presumably, this amendment is being instituted to deal with the recent terrorists attacks in the United States and to provide the Federal law enforcement agencies with additional tools in the apprehension of suspected terrorists.
